The director has confirmed that the AIDS crisis will likely play a large part in the story, as well as other events going on in the world at that time including the Gulf War and the rise of Silvio Berlusconi in Italy. The novel Find Me, however, is set ten years later, so who knows exactly how the events will come together. And he has some grand themes he wants to tackle in the movie. Guadagnino has already been dropping details about the plot, which will be set "five or six years afterwards," placing it in the late '80s. The Call Me By Your Name movie ends with Elio quietly coming to terms with Oliver's engagement.
